One Thing Is Needful

One thing is needful
“And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42 (NKJV)

If you have a one-time request from God, what would you request above all? What’s that one thing that settles it? What does scripture propose?

Our theme verse is one scene of the Bible that has always intrigued me. Martha invites Jesus to her house. Both Martha and Mary are seated at the feet of the Lord hearing His Word.

However, Martha is distracted with much serving, and she complains to Jesus so Mary could come to help her.

“And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42 (NKJV)

What did Mary choose that was better than Martha’s serving? Careful! The answer might seem obvious, but there’s always a twist.

Mary focused on Jesus; she chose Wisdom. Not only that, she heard the word of Wisdom. You would ask, what comes out of Wisdom?

“For the LORD gives wisdom: From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:6 NKJV

Mary chose Wisdom out of which is Knowledge and Understanding, and this Jesus says can never be taken away from her or anybody who possesses them.

My dear friend, of everything you’re involved in, and of everything that matters to you, one thing is most needful and that is Wisdom out of which is Knowledge and Understanding. So seek Wisdom and get understanding, for Wisdom is the principal thing (Proverbs 4:7).

It is that one needful thing, and it is far more precious than gold or the most prized commodity in all the realms. Let nothing distract you and let nothing you possess be prized above it. Like King Solomon, seek it with everything you have.

Wisdom is the principal thing and as you get Wisdom, seek understanding, for it is the key that unlocks the benefits of Wisdom. Wisdom without understanding is futile.Click To Tweet

His Way and His Word

Author Solomon-Ray

In our theme verse are words from one of the most prolific characters in scripture and of all times: David. David wrote this psalm as an act of thanksgiving to God for delivering him from the hands of King Saul. David felt distressed from every angle, and he fled from King Saul who sought for his life. Despite everything, God saw him through those death-defying and difficult times.
